Zack Snyder has so much faith in his upcoming Netflix zombie heist film “Army of the Dead” that development is already underway on spin-offs. Specifically an untitled film prequel and a tie-in anime series are both in development at Netflix.
The upcoming movie follows a group of mercenaries who head into a zombie-infested Las Vegas as they try to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.
Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro, Hiroyuki Sanada, Garret Dillahunt, Matthias Schweighofer, Raul Castillo and Nora Arnezeder star in the film which will hit the service in 2021.
Shay Hatten, one of the writers of the screenplay, will also write the prequel and the anime series. The prequel will be directed by and star Schweighofer reprising his role of Ludwig Dieter from Snyder’s film. Snyder will produce that prequel.
Jay Oliva serves as showrunner of the anime titled “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” which will chronicle the origin story of Bautista’s character and his rescue crew during the initial fall of Vegas as they confront the mysterious source of the zombie outbreak.
Snyder himself will direct two episodes of the series, while Oliva helms another two and all the major cast of the film will lend their voices to the anime..
Snyder said in a statement Thursday: “I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to partner with Netflix again as we expand the ‘Army of the Dead’ universe with both an international prequel, as well as exploring the visually dynamic world of animation. Its been a great collaboration and we are thrilled that Netflix sees this as big of an IP as we do.”
