Zac Efron has signed on to star in a new film adaptation of Stephen King’s classic sci-fi thriller “Firestarter” at Universal Pictures, Blumhouse and Weed Road.
The story follows a young girl who develops pyrokinetic abilities and is abducted by a secret government agency that wants to harness her powerful gift as a weapon.
Efron will play the girl’s father, Andy McGee, in a role David Keith played in the original 1980s movie. The announcement comes on the day of the 40th anniversary of the book.
Filmmaker Keith Thomas will direct from a script by Scott Teems (“Halloween Kills”). Jason Blum and Akiva Goldsman will produce and Martha De Laurentiis will executive produce.
