Aircraft Pictures and Dolphin Entertainment have announced plans for a reimagining of MGM’s famed 1986 sports drama “Youngblood” which starred Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves in his first screen role.
The story follows Dean Youngblood, a hockey prodigy who joins the Hamilton Bulldogs and faces toxic behavior throughout his journey to the National Hockey League draft.
The update switches out Lowe’s rural farmhand incarnation for an African-American hockey prodigy. The plan is to shoot early next year.
Rising filmmaker Charles Officer (“Akilla’s Escape”), who played professional hockey with the Calgary Flames farm team, is on board to direct the project, which is based on a script by Josh Epstein, Kyle Rideout, Seneca Aaron and Officer.
