“You” & “Phone” Fight For Box-Office Scraps

Universal Pictures

Paramount and Universal are arguing about who is the king of the worst Halloween box-office in over three decades (pandemic aside).

Paramount’s romance-drama “Regretting You” is claiming to have taken the top spot in its second weekend with $8.1 million, beating out Universal’s “Black Phone 2” in its third weekend with $8 million.

The numbers are so close that it’s expected the true winner won’t be crowned until Monday, but it will be a hollow victory.

Overall ticket sales domestically for the weekend are coming in at $49.8 million – the lowest-grossing Halloween weekend since a $49.2 million haul all the way back in 1993.

It follows the worst October for filmgoing in 27 years as the sole major commercial studio tentpole, “TRON: Ares,” bombed on arrival.

It wasn’t all bad news. Internationally, “Black Phone” pushed past the $100 million mark to hit $104.7 million while Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” is now up to $190.8 million worldwide and looks like it’ll pass $200 million this month. Finally, the anime “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” is up to $139 million worldwide.
