Filmmaker Wayne Che Yip is set to direct the next block of episodes of the upcoming first season of Amazon Studios’ mega-budget “The Lord of the Rings” TV series.
The already announced J.A. Bayona (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “The Shallows”) helmed the first two episodes of the series which is deep into production in New Zealand. Yip has now taken over as helmer of the next four episodes of the first season.
Yip is a TV veteran, having worked on the original British “Utopia” and “Misfits” along with “Preacher,” “Doctor Who,” “Happy,” “Into the Badlands,” “Tatau,” “Happy!,” “Deadly Class,” “Doom Patrol,” “Treadstone” and Amazon’s own “Hunters” and the forthcoming “The Wheel of Time”.
In a statement, Yip says: “It is a true honor to be invited into the world of Tolkien by J.D. & Patrick and Amazon Studios. Every day I look forward to working with the incredible team here in New Zealand as we humbly contribute to the legacy of the greatest stories ever told.”
The new series serves as a prequel, set thousands of years prior to “The Lord of the Rings” during the Second Age of Middle-earth’s history – the period in which the rings of power were forged. The series is executive produced and showrun by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.
