Showtime has renewed its highly buzzed-about breakout drama “Yellowjackets” for a third season. The early pickup order comes a full three months ahead of the show’s second season premiere in March.
The show drew more than five million cross-platform viewers per episode in its first season along with earning more than seven Emmy nominations. It also became a rare thing in the streaming age – a genuine water cooler talk-generating hit.
Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson created and serve as showrunners on the series about a group of former high school soccer players who survived a plane crash 25 years earlier and are trying to keep their lives together while their past – and what they did in the wilderness – threatens their present.
McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and Paramount Media Networks, says in a statement: “With Yellowjackets‘ runaway success in season one and the pent-up anticipation for season two, we wanted to maximize the momentum by fast-tracking season three now. The show’s ambition is only exceeded by its execution, and I thank the incredible creative team behind it, including Ashley, Bart, Jonathan [Lisco], eOne and the Showtime team, for turning this into such a success.”
Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Tawny Cypress, Sophie Nélisse, Samantha Hanratty, Sophie Thatcher, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Courtney Eaton, Liv Hewson, Steven Krueger, Warren Kole and Kevin Alves star.
Lauren Ambrose and Simone Kessell have signed on as regulars for season two, and Elijah Wood will have a key guest-starring arc across the season.
