Work On “Heartstopper” S3 Is Underway

Netflix

Though the second season of Netflix’s British coming-of-age romance series “Heartstopper” just premiered on the service, it’s likely we can expect a third season sooner rather than later according to creator Alice Oseman.

The series, based on Oseman’s webcomic, explores the blossoming relationship between Truham Grammar School students Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), as well as the lives of all their friends.

The first season debuted to critical acclaim and strong numbers from audiences, leading to a quick two-season renewal order two months after it premiered.

Timed with the new season’s premiere on Friday, Oseman spoke with EW and offered an update on how the third season is going. She confirmed she was already hard at work on the new season:

I’ve started writing it right now. It’s very much underway. We did not expect to get a season 3 renewal at the same time as season 2 because that’s quite rare, to be honest.

What that did do is it gave us more time to think about what’s gonna happen in season 3. I could set things up safely in season 2 knowing that we would be able to get to it in season 3, which is not a luxury that I had in season 1.

I really wanted season 1 to feel like it had an ending just in case we didn’t get any more. There’s truly nothing I hate more than a show that gets cancelled on a cliffhanger.”

She adds to THR that she’s working alongside executive producer Patrick Walters and editor Lauren James on the scripts for the new season and adds: “We want to get season three made so there’s not a big, long wait in between the seasons.”

Of course, the ongoing actor’s and writer’s strikes are potentially impacting the UK production, so it’s not clear when a third season might arrive just yet.
