Wong Kar Wai’s “Blossoms” Series Confirmed

Famed “In the Mood for Love” and “Happy Together” filmmaker Wong Kar-wai has finally confirmed that “Blossoms Shanghai” will be his first dramatic TV series production with the project setup at his Jet Tone label.

An adaptation of Jin Yucheng’s multi-award-winning novel, “Blossoms,” the series is penned by award-winning screenwriter Qin Wen and set during the economic boom time of 1990s Shanghai.

Hu Ge (“The Wild Goose Lake,” “The Climbers”) leads the cast as a young opportunist with a troubled past venturing into the gilded city. This explores that glamour that follows his dazzling wealth and his entanglement with four fabulous women that represent the pursuits of his life: adventure, honor, love and innocence.

Though associated with the Hong Kong film industry, Wong was born in Shanghai and studied there so this marks a homecoming of sorts with production to take place entirely in the city. Wong is set as series producer and director of the pilot episode while Oscar winner Peter Pau (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) serves as cinematographer.

Tencent Penguin Pictures has acquired the Chinese rights and will likely release it through the Tencent Video streaming platform.
