In an otherwise quiet weekend, social media talk has all come down to “Wonder Woman 1984” which has suddenly had a major shift thanks to its release in the United States both in cinemas and via HBO Max.
While the first film (aside from its dud last half hour) was pretty much universally embraced, this sequel has unexpectedly proven to be one of the most divisive blockbusters since “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”. Reactions are less extreme than that film though, rather than ‘this is genius/this destroyed my life’ arguments it appears to be more this was good/terrible.
The film first screened for a handful of U.S. critics a few weeks back with those reviews resulting in an 89% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Then, when the film opened on Christmas Day, more regular and overseas critics got to weigh in, and the film’s score plummeted to just 65%.
That is a drop almost unheard of in the review aggregate site’s history – surprisingly its lower than the audience score, which sits at 74%. Things aren’t much better on Metacritic where it has a 59/100 critics score and a 4.8/10 user score. Film Twitter, often a dumpster fire on a regular day, has turned rather toxic regarding the film.
