“Wicked” Musical Film To Be Split Into Two

The long-gestating film adaptation of the musical “Wicked” is undergoing a change-up and will be split into two films.

Filmmaker Jon M. Chu announced the news on social media this morning, confirming Universal Pictures will release the first movie on Christmas Day 2024 with the second to come a year later on Christmas Day 2025.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are set to star in the lead roles of Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. They succeed in the roles played by Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel on Broadway.

This prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” deals with the lead up to Dorothy’s arrival in Oz and marks Chu’s follow-up to last year’s rave-reviewed but underperforming adaptation of the musical “In the Heights”.

Stephen Schwartz, who penned the music and lyrics to the original Broadway show, is adapting the screenplay with Winnie Holzman. Marc Platt, is producing,
