A year ago when tickets went on sale for the first film in the two-part “Wicked” movie adaptation, Universal Pictures released a trailer showcasing the songs from that first half of the musical – “Defying Gravity,” “Popular,” “Dancing through Life,” and “What is this Feeling”.
We’ve now reached that time in the cycle for the upcoming second film “Wicked: For Good” which closes out the saga and which begins selling tickets today. Though the second half of the stage show is generally seen as having the weaker song line-up, there’s still some notable tracks here.
The clip showcases Elphaba’s “No Good Deed” number, Glinda’s “Thank Goodness,” Fiyero’s “As Long As You’re Mine” and the duet “For Good”.
Even more interesting is that it offers a very brief first listen of the two new songs written exclusively for the film by the original musical’s songwriter Stephen Schwartz – the Glinda track “The Girl In The Bubble” and the Elphaba track “No Place Like Home”.
In the new film Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), now branded the Wicked Witch of the West, lives in hiding within the forests of Oz. From exile, she continues her fight for the liberation of the oppressed Animals and seeks to reveal the Wizard’s (Jeff Goldblum) deceit.
Glinda (Ariana Grande) basks in her newfound fame as the radiant face of Goodness, following Madame Morrible’s (Michelle Yeoh) guidance to maintain the illusion of peace and stability under the Wizard’s rule.
As Glinda’s celebrity grows and her royal marriage to Prince Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) approaches, she is haunted by memories of her lost friendship with Elphaba. Her attempts to reconcile them fail, deepening their divide and unleashing consequences that alter the lives of Boq (Ethan Slater), Fiyero, and Nessarose (Marissa Bode).
When a girl from Kansas upends their world, Glinda and Elphaba are forced to confront one another amid chaos. Their final act of understanding and compassion becomes the key to changing not just themselves but the fate of all Oz — for good.
“Wicked: For Good” opens in cinemas on November 21st.
