Amazon Prime Video’s “The Wheel of Time” is set to premiere its second season on September 1st this year, and with it will come a scale aiming to be visibly bigger than the first season.
Budget-wise the series can’t begin to compete with Amazon’s other epic fantasy work based on a famed novel series, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. This was reflected in a certain cheapness to the first season’s look.
Sanaa Hamri, a producer and director on the series, says the second season aims to better that with bigger stakes, bigger battles and a season driven more by big action and character moments than the first.
Speaking with SFX Magazine, Hamri and fellow producer Marigo Kehoe confirm the new season features “one of the biggest battles ever” with a finale that takes it to “new heights”. They explain showrunner Rafe Judkins’ plans:
“There are times when I had six cameras going at the same time. When I met with [showrunner] Rafe [Judkins], we talked about the vision for season two and about more action, more deep, nuanced character work, as well as strong imagery. When you have a great season one base, you can really jump off of that and take some really great visual chances, and also within the acting of it all.”
Like the first season, the second will clock in at eight episodes and will see Josha Stradowski’s Rand al’Thor dealing with his destiny, whilst a new threat emerges from the invading Seanchan arrives.
Daniel Henney, Sophie Okonedo, Zoë Robins, Madeleine Madden, and Marcus Rutherford all reprise their roles, while Ceara Coveney, Donal Finn, and Natasha O’Keefe join the cast.
The new season runs with weekly episodes from September 1st to October 20th on Prime Video.
