WBD Moves Forward With DC Plans

Warner Bros. Discovery

James Gunn’s “Superman” continues to do very robust business domestically – the title pulled in a further $12.9 million on Monday and $17.1 million on Tuesday.

That latter figure is the biggest post-opening Tuesday number for any film this year – ahead of both “Lilo & Stitch” and “Jurassic World: Rebirth” which were at around $15 million for their first post-opening Tuesdays. It’s also fourth overall for DC Tuesday box office behind “Aquaman” and the latter two “Dark Knight” films.

Good word of mouth is expected to keep the film performing well domestically, and hold off any major drops overseas next weekend, but the soft international numbers is thought to be a little underwhelming (albeit expected for a hero so linked with America) that it will be something to focus on with further DC films.

Either way, Warner Bros. Discovery is taking it as a sign to push forward with their DC plans according to a new report at Variety which also reconfirms the film’s economics – a $225 million production budget and a $125 million marketing campaign.

They confirm they have sequel options on stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, but no follow-up is expected to be announced shortly. Instead, sources for the trade say the “Wonder Woman” movie is being fast-tracked while the studio is ‘thrilled’ with Matt Reeves’ just-submitted screenplay for “The Batman”.

Gunn also tells Screen Rant that he’s building towards something but in an unexpected way: “I do know whose story it is. And it probably isn’t anyone [you] would ever expect.”

Asked if it’s someone we’ve seen, he affirms “yes”. Asked if there’s a throughline and if it’s building towards a big event, he says:

“Mm-hmm, yeah and it’s not what anyone thinks. It’s not what anyone would guess. But I think that if people watch the next season of Peacemaker, they’ll see where a lot of these things are going, and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen.”

The next DCU effort is “Peacemaker” Season 2 premiering next month, followed by “Supergirl,” “Clayface” and more.
