A new “Tom and Jerry” theatrical feature is in the works at Warner Bros. Pictures Animation.

“Celeste and Jesse Forever” scribes Rashida Jones and Will McCormack along with Oscar-winning animation director Michael Govier (“If Anything Happens I Love You”) have been set to write the script for the project.

The plan is to offer a fresh take on crazy shenanigans of cat Tom and mouse Jerry. Further plot specifics are under wraps as the project is still relatively early in development.

The characters were created by William Hanna & Joseph Barbera in 1940 for MGM and starred in over 100 shorts which won seven Oscars between them.

Gene Deitch and Chuck Jones also famously worked on the original shorts. The characters still pop up on occasion, and most recently toplined the Tim Story-directed 2021 hybrid film “Tom & Jerry”.

They remain one of the most popular animated short film series of all time and spawned several films.
