“Watchmen” Reclassified As Limited Series

HBO has announced that its “Watchmen” TV series is being reclassified from a drama series to a limited series, including for “any possible future installments”.

The shift allows the series to compete (and frankly dominate) the limited series category in TV awards through to the Emmy’s later this year. Showrunner Damon Lindelof and the network always pitched the show as self-contained rather than an ongoing story over multiple seasons.

Its major critical success and strong audience numbers led to obvious speculation about a potential follow-up, the same thing happened with HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” but there’s zero real movement on doing more episodes and those involved seem reluctant to do so – including Lindelof.

This reclassification suggests they’re sticking to that plan and not proceeding. HBO’s full statement says: “We discussed with the producers and felt limited series was the most accurate representation of the show and any possible future installments.”
