With Zoe Kravitz set as Catwoman and Paul Dano to play The Riddler, Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” is now trying to fill out the last of the trio of villains who will appear along Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader in the film.
The role of The Penguin is now up for consideration reports Deadline and sources indicate a search is well underway now that Jonah Hill, who was initially up for the part but apparently ‘fancied’ playing The Riddler instead, is fully out.
There are no names presently revealed to be on a shortlist for the role though suggestions are flying all over the place including Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Giamatti, Josh Gad, Andy Serkis and Brian Tyree Henry.
A lot, of course, depends upon which version of the character they take. Burgess Meredith played the character as a squawking fiendish buffoon in the original 1960s series, while Danny DeVito painted him as a dejected incel and carnival freak show character in 1992’s “Batman Returns”.
Robin Lord Taylor’s more ruthless, emotionally bipolar and Machiavellian version of the role on FOX’s “Gotham” series scored much acclaim, becoming the show’s breakout character in early seasons. Reeves has previously called his version of “The Batman” a “point of view-driven, noir Batman tale” and thus the villain is more likely to have the character as an information dealer and well-connected underworld figure.
“The Batman” is scheduled to begin production early next year for a June 2021 release.
