Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired Marvin Gaye biopic “What’s Going On” which has Allen Hughes (“From Hell,” “The Book of Eli”) set to direct and will be produced by Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine and Andrew Lazar.
Instead of a traditional biopic, this will thread Gaye’s past with the events that shaped his final tour to result in a “musical odyssey” and “theatrical experience”.
The story will chronicle his relationship with his father (who fatally shot him in 1984 at age 44), address the demons that haunted him and celebrate the women who inspired his iconic love songs like “Sexual Healing,” “Let’s Get It On” and “What’s Going On”
Boasting a script by poet-playwright Marcus Gardley and the rights to use all of Gaye’s signature songs thanks to his estate and Motown. Filming will kick off next year for a 2023 release.
