Late January 2023 has been announced as the release date of a sequel to Chinese sci-fi hit “The Wandering Earth” which premiered last year in the same Lunar New Year holiday period.
Produced by Beijing Culture on a budget of around $50 million, the original grossed $691 million in China – the country’s third highest grossing film of all time – and was later picked up by Netflix for global release.
Director Frant Gwo announced the sequel’s date during China’s Golden Rooster Film Festival. He says two years of pre-production have already been underway and while no title is yet set, the script is largely completed and they’re now looking at new technologies for the production to utilise.
