Wan Talks “Flash” Impact On “Aquaman 2”

Warner Bros. Pictures

In June comes “The Flash” movie, a title that effectively shakes up the events of the DC Extended Universe and changes things in a way it’s not clear how it’s going to leave the Snyder-verse.

After it, only two films remain that are part of that continuity – the smaller “Blue Beetle” which is essentially standalone and unaffected, and James Wan’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom”.

The film marks a follow-up to 2018’s “Aquaman” which snagged $1.14 billion and is currently the highest-grossing of all the DCEU films. With a December release, the sequel still has a little time to make a last-minute tweak or two if necessary.

Speaking with THR today, Wan has confirmed that “The Flash” will not have a significant impact on his “Aquaman” sequel. That said, he’s also had to keep an eye on what’s going on and how it could impact:

“I’ve had to make adjustments all along the way. The DCU has been through lots of different versions, and one of the things that was challenging about this film was keeping track of what’s going on.

Fortunately, the Aquaman universe is pretty far removed from the rest of the world. We’re going to many different underwater kingdoms that are not necessarily related to what’s happening with the other movies and characters, so we’re stand-alone in that respect.

So I can just tell my story on its own without being affected too much, but at the same time, I have to be mindful of what’s been happening.”

Asked when he will finish post-production, he says: “I hope to finish it up soon-ish,” adding that it’s a big movie with a lot of moving parts. He also says it’s quite different from the first movie in terms of tone, a more serious affair with a real message along with being a fun action-fantasy movie.

Separately in the interview, he says “Furious 7” was definitely the hardest movie of his career. “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is slated to open on December 20th.
