Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” pulled in $180 million domestically and $150 million overseas this weekend for a global launch of $330 million.
Those numbers demolished the record for a November opening in North America, easily beating 2013’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” with $158 million. It’s also the third biggest opening of the pandemic era, behind only two other Marvel projects – “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($260M) and the “Doctor Strange” sequel ($187M).
To give you an idea of how big, the film in three days has nearly matched the several weeks worldwide total haul of “Black Adam” ($350 million) to date.
The $250 million-budgeted ‘Wakanda Forever’ production now must navigate a dramatically altered theatrical landscape and is unlikely to achieve the $1.4 billion global haul of its predecessor.
In limited release, Steven Spielberg’s $40 million-budgeted “The Fabelmans” took in $160,000 from four screens and has landed not just great critical reviews but a strong A CinemaScore rating from audiences, suggesting good word-of-mouth will spread.
Its opening is on par with other recent limited releases like “Tar” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” which also pulled in a similar amount from initial four-screen launches.
