When it comes to “Star Wars,” many of the screen efforts made in recent years have been delving into time periods or characters audiences are familiar with.

Even efforts that change up the tone from “Rogue One” to “The Mandalorian” are still relying on callbacks to familiar faces or iconography, whereas others like “Obi-Wan Kenobi” or “Solo” just downright wallow in their fan service.

However things are about to change. The upcoming TV series “Star Wars: The Acolyte” will finally take us to a time period well away from the ones we’re familiar as it explores the final days of the High Republic Era.

Last month showrunner Leslye Headland spoke about how she deliberately wanted to move away from the various other “Star Wars” shows and their reliance on legacy characters even as the show will still focus on the Jedi order.

It’s a sentiment “Thor: Love and Thunder” filmmaker Taika Waititi seems to agree with. The New Zealand filmmaker spoke to TotalFilm recently about his planned “Star Wars” film and indicated his work is planning to step into new territory for the franchise – not just because he wants to, but because the franchise needs to in order to stay healthy:

“Look, I think for the ‘Star Wars’ universe to expand, it has to expand. I don’t think that I’m any use in the ‘Star Wars’ universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.

That all stands alone, that’s great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise, it feels like it’s a very small story.”

Waititi’s film is expected to be the next “Star Wars” film that will actually hit screens, though there are no details as yet in regards to what we can expect from it. No release date for his project has yet been set either.
