Author Terry McMillan has announced that a television adaptation of his celebrated 1992 novel “Waiting to Exhale” is in the works with Lee Daniels (“The Paperboy,” “The Butler”) attached to produce.
Also onboard are Anthony Hemingway (“Red Tails”) to direct while Attica Locke and Tembi Locke are writing the script adaptation, McMillan adding that he “lucked out” with this take.
Previously adapted into the Forest Whitaker-directed 1995 film starring Angela Bassett and Whitney Houston, the film followed four older Phoenix-residing women navigating their complex relationships with the men in their lives as well as with one another. The film grossed over $81 million worldwide and became a pop culture reference.
The project has long been in development at 20th Television where Daniels has an overall deal in place. Hemingway, Richard Abate, Jermaine Johnson, and Will Rowbotham will also executive produce.
