Timed with the 30th anniversary of the incident, Showtime has premiered the full trailer for its five-episode limited series “Waco: The Aftermath”. The project serves as a sequel to the 2018 mini-series “Waco” starring Taylor Kitsch and Michael Shannon.
One of the first major projects to premiere on the Paramount Network, it dramatized exploration of the 51-day 1993 standoff between the FBI, ATF and the religious cult the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas – one which culminated in a fatal fire.
Kitsch played the cult’s charismatic leader David Koresh with Michael Shannon as FBI investigator and negotiator Gary Noesner. Shannon will reprise his role for the sequel series which focuses on the fallout of the disaster including the trials of the surviving members of the sect, and the rise of homegrown terrorist Timothy McVeigh (Alex Breaux).
John Leguizamo, Giovanni Ribisi, Shea Whigham, Gary Cole, David Costabile, J. Smith Cameron, John Hoogenakker, Keean Johnson, Abbey Lee, Annika Marks, Michael Cassidy, Sasheer Zamata, John Hoogenakker, Kali Rocha, Nicholas Kolev, Michael Vincent Berry, and Michael Luwoye.
The trailer also shows a first look at Keean Johnson as Vernon Howell, aka David Koresh, in his younger days for what will likely be flashbacks to ten years earlier in 1983 showing how then 23-year-old Koresh campaigned to take over the Branch Davidian sect from then president Lois Roden (J. Smith-Cameron).
Drew Dowdle and John Erick Dowdle serve as creators, showrunners, directors, and executive producers on the series. Initially produced for Paramount+ but now airing on Showtime, the sequel series will release weekly episodes from April 14th with the original “Waco” set to be available to stream in full on Showtime this Friday.
