The submarine conspiracy thriller “Vigil” on BBC1 has become the UK’s top-rated new series in over three years.

Suranne Jones leads the cast of the six-parter as DCI Amy Silva of the Scottish Police who is sent onboard the HMS Vigil, a Vanguard-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, to investigate a death on board.

The death took place shortly after the mysterious disappearance of a fishing trawler, and her investigations along with those of her colleagues ashore bring the police into conflict with both the Royal Navy and MI5.

Consolidated data from the broadcaster indicates that over its first thirty days, the first episode reached 13.4 million viewers in the UK – the best rating since the Richard Madden and Keely Hawes-led mini-series sensation “Bodyguard”.

The series was written and created by writer Tom Edge based on an original idea by George Aza-Selinger. Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph co-star in the series which aired its finale in the UK last week.
