There have been rumors of a PS5 Pro ever since the PS5 launched in 2020. For a good year or so, there have also been rumors of a new version of the current PS5 in the works – one with a detachable disc drive.
Neither a PS5 Pro nor that other kind (which has been wrongly dubbed the PS5 Slim) have been announced, but court documents during the Microsoft v. FCC hearing seemed to confirm the new model’s existence and indicated it would be released later this year.
Then a video that appeared on social media over the weekend appears to show what the new model looks like. So far, and the most common reaction seems to be: ‘That’s it?’
The case shown seems to be the same as the base model. The biggest change is two USB-C ports on the front and a dark line separating each of the ‘plates’ into two pieces – a change probably tied to the removable disc drive.
The item first originated as photos late last week in a Chinese forum and was then picked up by numerous outlets before being shared all over Twitter and Reddit. That was followed by a video on the weekend offering the best look yet at the new variant.
Sony currently sells two versions of the PS5 – a $399 PS5 Digital Edition and a $499 PS5 with a disc drive. The new model is expected to be sold standalone without the disc drive attached or with the drive in a bundle. It’s believed Sony will sell the drive itself separately for those who want to get it at a later date.
