Venom Is A Smash Hit In China

The “Spider-Man” spin-off film “Venom” earned a whopping $34.2 million on its first day in China this week, with the film headed for a $95 million Friday-Sunday opening weekend haul.

That is somewhat insane business, the strongest opening day ever for a solo superhero film in China and the second-biggest for any superhero movie after “Avengers: Infinity War”.

In fact it’s ahead of blockbusters like “Captain America: Civil War” ($30m in 2016), “Avengers: Age of Ultron” ($33m in 2015), “Transformers: Age of Extinction” ($30m in 2014), “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($33m in 2016), “Ant-Man and the Wasp” ($24m), “Spider-Man: Homecoming” ($21.6m) and “Black Panther” ($22.7m).

The additional haul this weekend will send the film past the $650 million worldwide box-office mark and will easily outgross “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp” by the time it finishes its run along with being more profitable than any of Sony’s prior “Spider-Man” movies.
