“Velma” Scores Season 2 Renewal

Max

Max has officially renewed its much discussed animated series “Velma” for a second season. The renewal was announced at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival today.

The adult animated comedy series spin on the “Scooby Doo” franchise stars Mindy Kaling as the voice of Velma Dinkley with the series telling the origin story of her and the Mystery Inc. gang.

The animated series made its debut earlier this year and quickly became a lightning rod for discussion and derision. Critics reviews were mixed and audience scores were legendarily bad with the show at one point becoming the lowest-rated TV series across the entire IMDb and an audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes of just 7%.

Kaling voiced Velma with the cast including Glenn Howerton, Sam Richardson, Constance Wu, Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Ming-Na Wen, Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, Ken Leung, Cherry Jones, Frank Welker and ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic.

Charlie Grandy serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Mindy Kaling, Howard Klein, and Sam Register.

Suzanna Makkos, executive vp of original comedy and adult animation for Max and Adult Swim, revealed the news during her ‘Share With’ session and also confirmed the fourth season of “Harley Quinn” will return to Max this summer.

Makkos also revealed a new series titled “Anything Factory” in development from “Rick and Morty” writer Tom Kauffman. That follows a man who returns home to manage the family business – a Wonka-esque factory chock full of ethics violations.

Other animated shows mentioned during her presentation for Max in the near future include “Young Love,” “Ten Year Old Tom,” “Clone High,” “Fired on Mars,” “Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake,” “Scavengers Reign,” the “Harley Quinn” spinoff ” Kite Man: Hell Yeah!,” and James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC series “Creature Commandos”.
