Actor/producer Vince Vaughn has offered an update on talk of a potential sequel to his iconic 2004 comedy “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story”.
Speaking at the premiere of his new comedy “Christmas with the Campbells” on Wednesday, Vaughn was asked about the sequel.
He tells THR that those involved are open to returning, but remain concerned about ruining the series by doing so:
“They’ve always talked about these things forever and I had an idea that was fun and the studio likes it, so we’ll see where it goes. I think Ben [Stiller] is open to doing it. I think he’s in the same boat as me, actually, which is if it’s a really fun and great idea, then that’s fun, but if it’s just something to go do it again, then why?”
Vaughn brought up the recent sequel “A Christmas Story Christmas,” the follow-up to 1983’s “A Christmas Story”. Vaughn served as a producer on the sequel and calls it an example of doing a sequel right and a film that can stand by itself:
“You would just want to make sure going into Dodgeball that it feels like a nice continuation and a story that could stand on its own. I think for all of us if it feels right and it’s funny, it would be something to go back to, and if it’s not, it’s just another idea getting kicked around.”
The 2004 original scored rave reviews and grossed almost $170 million before becoming a cult classic in its own right.
