Universal Pictures and James Wan’s Atomic Monster are teaming to produce an original horror thriller inspired by the studio’s monster-movie legacy.
The story will focus on a group of teenagers who discover that a neighbor is building a monster in his basement – a monster which soon gets loose. Robbie Thompson (“Supernatural”) is writing the script and Wan is aboard to produce.
Much like his regular cohort Leigh Whannell’s “The Invisible Man,” it’s expected this will be another stand-alone, filmmaker-driven effort rather than an interconnected universe one. Whether it’s a Blumhouse Production or not isn’t clear, though producer Jason Blum has recently suggested a desire to reinvent Frankenstein in a similar way – could this be that film?
The Wan-directed “Malignant” opens later this year and just announced McKenna Grace as a cast member. Also on the way is the Wan-produced “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” and the “Mortal Kombat” reboot early next year.
