Universal Crosses $3 Billion Box-Office Mark

New Jurassic World Targets Big Launch
Universal Pictures

Universal Pictures has announced that it has grossed over $3 billion worldwide at the box-office in the calendar year so far, the first studio since the pandemic began in early 2020 to cross that milestone.

Well over half that gross is due to two movies – “Jurassic World: Dominion” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru”, which have brought in $976 million and $790 million, respectively.

Others that have fared well include “The Bad Guys” ($246 million), The Black Phone” ($152 million), “Nope” ($113 million) and “Ambulance” ($52 million).

The company still has “Halloween Ends,” “Beast,” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” to come along with Spielberg’s “The Fablemans,” gay rom-com “Bros,” the Weinstein expose drama “She Said,” and the Clooney-Roberts rom-com “Ticket to Paradise”.

Domestically the U.S. box-office currently sits at $5 billion for the year so far, 31% behind the $7.32 billion gross of 2019 so far and well ahead of the $1.8 billion at the same point last year.

Also important is that the Top 10 domestic earners of the year so far are an even split of two films each from the five major studios – Paramount (Maverick, Sonic 2), Sony (Spider-Man, Uncharted), Disney (Dr. Strange, Thor), Warners (Batman, Elvis) and Universal (Jurassic, Minions).

Whilst business isn’t back to normal, it seems well on the way – though the current lack of releases over the next two months won’t help much.
