Independent data tracker SteamDB indicates that the just-released PC port of the “Uncharted: The Legacy of Thieves” collection has been PlayStation’s weakest first-party PC launch to date.
The collection reportedly attracted a peak player count of 10,851 this weekend – significantly down on the first weekends of “Days Gone” (27,000), “Horizon Zero Dawn” (56,000), “Spider-Man Remastered” (66,000) and “God of War” (73,000).
The reaction hasn’t been the problem. Both critics and user reviews have been very positive. Aside from some problematic keyboard/mouse issues, the port reportedly works fine and is not having “Horizon” style crashes.
That said, it has caught flack for not being graphically being about on par with the PS5 and not offering as big a jump in the way “God of War” and “Spider-Man” were as they offered more graphics tweaking options.
Part of the reasoning for the soft launch has been put down to the others arriving at relatively quiet times of the year with no real competition, as compared to “Uncharted” hitting in a hectic month with multiple new titles like “Gotham Knights,” “A Plague Tale: Requiem” and “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II” campaign also releasing last week.
Another reason being touted is the fact that the franchise has never been released on PC before, with new players hesitant to jump onto a fourth entry having not played the first three which aren’t available on PC.
In addition, the game being the oldest of the PC ports to date means most people who have been curious have already played it. Still, others are putting it on the marketing which has been minimal for the title, with Sony only announcing a release date in mid-late September.
The obvious question now is what impact this will have on other Sony ports and more specifically, other Naughty Dog ports such as the upcoming “The Last of Us Part I”.
The soft start certainly doesn’t bode well for fans’ desire for a potential full remaster/remake of the original “Uncharted” trilogy. That second entry of the trio is considered the best game of the franchise and arguably one of the best games of all time.
