“Uncharted” Game Star Talks Film Concerns

When it comes to video games, few are more widely beloved than voice actor Nolan North.

North has provided the voice for numerous characters across animation and video games and is best know for his work as treasure hunter Nathan Drake in the “Uncharted” video game series.

In a recent of episode of his YouTube series Retro Replay (via CBR), North surprisingly revealed that he’s more excited for the upcoming HBO “The Last of Us” series (based on the game from “Uncharted” developer Naughty Dog) than for the upcoming “Uncharted” film adaptation and explains why:

“I think the fact that they are going to make it a series, is way better than making a movie. I think it’s astounding. And having the guy who did Chernobyl [Craig Mazin] is the elephant in the room you need to get things done. I’m more excited about that, I gotta be honest, than I am an ‘Uncharted’ movie, because I love Mark Wahlberg, but I don’t see him as Sully. I just don’t see that as Sully.”

The “Uncharted” film has famously had a very rocky road to the big screen, having to deal with numerous key changes of writers, directors and actors along with a shift of focus on the story. Ultimately it settled on “Venom” helmer Ruben Fleischer directing while Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg were cast as Drake and Sully, casting choices that have made fans sceptical. The project, which effectively serves as a prequel to the games, was finally headed into production but on its first day of shooting was shut down by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

This is in contrast to “The Last of Us” which, though briefly was announced as a film adaptation with Sam Raimi producing, has since been retooled as an HBO series with both “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazan and the game’s creator Neil Druckmann both heavily involved in bringing the story to life with the show to be more of a direct adaptation. That announcement was met with an overwhelmingly positive response.
