A reboot of the critically acclaimed “Uncharted” video game series is rumored to be in the works.

The Leak (via Insider Gaming) reports that according to their sources, the treasure hunting adventure series has been approved for a reboot.

However, they indicate original developer Naughty Dog won’t be spearheading the project. Instead, the new take will fall under the leadership of an ‘unknown developer’ with Naughty Dog offering some assistance.

Recently there had been reports Naughty Dog was collaborating with a new internal game development team at Sony over one of their “beloved franchise” – it’s not clear if that report is referring to this.

No official word has come from Naughty Dog or Sony in regards to this either. The first game was released for the PlayStation 3 in 2007 and was created by celebrated game developer Amy Hennig. Reviews for the game were very good at the time and the title was a big sales success.

However it was with 2009’s sequel “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves” where the franchise really took off, delivering major critical and commercial success for the series with the title scoring numerous Game of the Year accolades. At 96/100 on Metacritic, it is still considered one of the greatest video games ever made.

The third and fourth scored similarly (but not quite as high) acclaim at 92/100 and 93/100 respectively. Hennig left after the third game with “The Last of Us” writer/creative director Neil Druckmann taking over on the fourth entry. Over 41 million copies of games from the franchise have been sold to date, and it remains one of the highest-rated game franchises of all time.
