“Uncharted” Developer On Franchise’s PC Debut

Naughty Dog’s “Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection” has just debuted on PC with the beloved developer describing this as a ‘transformative’ moment for the company.

Collecting the fourth game and the spin-off “The Lost Legacy,” this marks Naughty Dog’s first major PC release and comes ahead of a planned release “The Last of Us Part 1” sometime in the coming months.

Naughty Dog vice president Christian Gyrling discussed the significance of this release in a PlayStation Blog post yesterday saying: “It represents a pivotal moment for us, a chance to look ahead and expand the way we develop games, all while ensuring the level of quality our audience expects.”

Gyrling says the PlayStation 5 will remain Naughty Dog’s primary platform, but the release of its games on PC will enable it to reach a much wider audience and to grow as a developer.

Port specialist Iron Galaxy Studios helped port the title to PC and laid the groundwork for further ports to come. They also indicate that they are adding PC development to the way they develop games which means with new titles there shouldn’t be anywhere near as long a wait as the six years it took “Uncharted 4” to make the jump.

One of the obvious questions that has arisen from first-time players is why they opted to go with this first and not ‘The Nathan Drake Collection’ which includes the first three “Uncharted” games. Gyrling says the three PS3-era games would require “a major overhaul visually to stand-up to modern PC releases and the expectations players may have”. He does not indicate if the company has any plans to remake those games for modern machines like they did with “The Last of Part I”.

The PC port arrives ahead of a rush of PlayStation-to-PC ports in the near future with PS5 launch title “Sackboy: A Big Adventure” hitting PC next week, whilst “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” is coming to PC in a few weeks.
