Skydance New Media and Lucasfilm Games are collaborating to develop and produce a new “Star Wars” video game described as a “richly cinematic action-adventure game featuring an original story”.
The project hails from one of the most celebrated veteran talents in gaming – Amy Hennig, the head writer and creative director who spearheaded the teams behind the original “Uncharted” game trilogy.
Hennig famously left Naughty Dog in 2014 and moved to Visceral Games where she got to work on “Project Ragtag,” an ambitious “Star Wars” game that sounds similar to the goals they have for this one with it being a third-person narrative-driven action-adventure single-player game.
Excitement was high for that until EA shut down Visceral and cancelled the project in development. Hennig left and co-founded Skydance Media with Julian Beak, and the company announced plans for an unknown Marvel title late last year.
Now things have come back around again with Hennig and Beak starting afresh on a new “Star Wars” game after ‘Ragtag’ was snatched away from them. She says in a statement:
“I’ve often described how seeing Star Wars in 1977 essentially rewired my 12-year-old brain, shaping my creative life and future indelibly. I’m elated to be working with Lucasfilm Games again to tell interactive stories in this galaxy that I love.”
Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games, says in the statement:
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working again with Amy. She and the Skydance New Media team have the talent and ambition to create a unique Star Wars adventure. Their vision for making inviting, cinematic interactive entertainment makes this collaboration very exciting. We’re working hard with their team of experienced and talented developers, and we’re looking forward to sharing more with Star Wars fans when the time is right.”
The project joins at least five other “Star Wars” games in active development including a “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” sequel, Quantic Dreams’ “Star Wars: Eclipse,” an open-world title from Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, a strategy game from Bit Reactor, and a FPS title.
