In August this year came the news that Netflix’s beloved time-manipulating comic series adaptation “The Umbrella Academy” had been renewed for a fourth and final season.
Since then, details have been scarce beyond series showrunner and executive producer Steve Blackman revealing the script cover of the new season’s first episode titled “The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want”.
More recently, a rumor cropped up that the final run will consist of only six episodes, down from the ten-episode runs of each previous season.
When queried about this on Twitter, Blackman confirmed the news was accurate, saying: “It’s true. But you’re going to love them.” The same query suggested filming on the new episodes would be wrapped by May, but Blackman didn’t respond to that.
In response to the news, fans asked for longer episodes – something that’s quite possible as Netflix has no restrictions on runtime and plenty of its shows boast super-sized episodes. The length of the six episodes is unknown at this time.
“The Umbrella Academy” first aired in 2019 and follows a rather dysfunctional family of superpowered adopted siblings. At the end of the third season, the group essentially reset the universe and ended back up in the modern day, albeit without their powers.
At the same time, a new version of Reginald and his resurrected wife Abigail observe the city, now under their control. Regular cast members Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min and Colm Feore, are all expected back.
Blackman has also signed a multi-year deal with Netflix and is expected to produce an adaptation of the popular PlayStation video game “Horizon: Zero Dawn”.
