“Minari” director Lee Isaac Chung is in negotiations to helm the “Twister” sequel “Twisters” in the works at Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment.
“Twisters” will follow up the Jan De Bont-directed 1996 original that starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, was produced by Steven Spielberg and made $494 million at the worldwide box office.
Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin penned that film about a separated storm-chasing couple who reunite to track the storm of the century in Oklahoma.
“The Revenant” scribe Mark L. Smith is penning the sequel script, which reportedly aims to bring Helen Hunt back with the lead character being the daughter she had with Paxton’s character – a young woman who has caught the storm chasing bug her parents had.
“Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski was originally slated to direct back in 2020 but has since dropped out due to his commitment to Apple Studios’ Formula One racing movie feature starring Brad Pitt.
Universal and Warner Bros. Pictures are co-financing the project, with Universal taking the creative lead and Frank Marshall producing.
