“Tuscany,” “Faces,” “Exit 8” Hit The Box-Office

NEON

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” pulled in $17.7 million on its second Friday, ensuring the title should hit around $70 million for its sophomore weekend – a drop of around 47% from its debut of $131.7 million for the Friday-Sunday.

In comparison, the first film debuted with $146.4 million in its first weekend domestically, followed by $92.3 million in its second weekend.

By the end of the second weekend, the new film will be hovering at a domestic total of around $309 million. Rough estimates for the film’s overall box-office by analysts suggest it’ll ultimately come in about 12% shy of the $575 million total domestic gross of its predecessor.

Three smaller titles opened this week as counterprogramming. One was the rom-com “You, Me & Tuscany” with an $8.3 million opening in fourth place. The Halle Bailey and Rege-Jean Page led film received an A- CinemaScore and is pulling in mostly women (79%), especially in the 25-34 demographic.

The other two were indie horror titles – the remake of “Faces of Death” and the critically acclaimed “Exit 8”. The former, which earned a dismal C CinemaScore, is looking at a $1.8 million gross while the latter is at $1.5 million.

“Exit 8” has already earned over $40 million overseas for what was a fairly cheap-to-produce film so its U.S. grosses don’t make much of a dent. Further box-office details tomorrow.
