While we’ve seen some more regular trailers, Sony and Sucker Punch Productions haven’t really shown off much gameplay from the highly anticipated PlayStation exclusive “Ghost of Tsushima” since its first reveal in 2018.
That changed in a live demo today with a new nearly 20-minute example of free roaming gameplay which was streamed out as a part of the latest PlayStation ‘State of Play’ event.
The clip shows off the title’s vast open world, at times lavish art direction and fantastic score along with some of its traversal, combat, elaborate photo mode and character customization systems. There’s also a Japanese voice track.
The big treat though came at the end and will please Akira Kurosawa fans. The makers have included ‘Samurai Cinema’ mode that can be turned on at any point in the game (including the beginning) to deliver an experience more akin to films like “Seven Samurai” or “Yojimbo”.
The mode not only makes the game black-and-white, but adds film grain, dust, scratches and flicker to the visuals, increases the wind elements of the environment itself, and adjusts the on screen title graphics to be much more akin to that style of films. Jump to 16min 18secs to check out that bit.
“Ghost of Tsushima” releases on PlayStation 4 on July 17.
