“TRON: Ares” Headed For $132 Million Loss

Disney

Disney is reportedly headed for a $132.7 million loss on the recently released “TRON: Ares” film following new details about the film’s budget and box-office performance.

Deadline reports that the film’s net production budget came in ultimately at $220 million, not the $170-180 million figure which was previously out there, and that’s including Canadian tax credits.

As of Sunday, the film closed out its second weekend with $103 million worldwide – including a 67% second weekend drop-off domestically. As a result, projections for the film’s total gross worldwide appears to be levelling out at $160 million.

The trade estimates that on those numbers, the film will ultimately land on a total of $214.8 million in revenue with $72.2 million of that being the studio’s share of the theatrical run, $37.6 million in home entertainment, $100 million in global television rights, and a further $5 million from the airlines – resulting in $214.8 million.

On the cost side, that $220 million budget also has added to it $102.5 million in global P&A spend, plus $10.8 million in others costs and $14.2 million in residuals – bringing the film’s total cost to $347.5 million. $347.5 million – $214.8 million = $132.7 million.

As previously reported, it’s expected Disney intends to put the franchise on ice when it comes to more big screen outings.
