“TRON: Ares” De-Rezzed At Box-Office

Disney

Going into the weekend, Disney’s “TRON: Ares” was rumored to be heading for a strong start with projections suggesting in the $40 million range – that hasn’t panned out.

The $180 million-budgeted film is on track for a $35-37 million opening this weekend following a disappointing $14.3 million Friday (including previews) – an opening day lower than infamous Jared Leto-led flop “Morbius”.

It’s also notably lower than “TRON: Legacy” which debuted 15 years ago to $44 million. Critics reviews are mixed and audiences gave it a B+ CinemaScore, the same as ‘Legacy’, suggests it’s not going to fare well domestically.

Both the third weekend of “One Battle After Another” and the first of the Channing Tatum-led “Roofman” are vying for second and third place, with both set to earn anywhere between $7-8 million each. “Roofman” came in at just a $19 million budget and so will do alright. It also earned a B+ CinemaScore.

“Gabby’s Dollhouse” and “The Conjuring: Last Rites” will round out the top five. Two other newcomers didn’t fare so well. One is the faith-based inspirational speaker drama “Soul on Fire” which debuted in sixth place to $3 million.

The other is the J-Lo lead musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman” which opened on 1,300 screens and will snag just $1 million for the weekend. Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt” also played on a few screens with a $25,000 per screen average.
