“Trolls World Tour” Smashes VOD Records

In some unsurprising news, Universal Pictures’ release of “Trolls World Tour” direct to digital as well as in the twenty-one drive-in theaters that remain open North America, has become the biggest debut of a digital title of all time.

According to the studio, “Trolls World Tour” is the biggest opening day and opening weekend ever for a digital title and generated approximately 10x that of Universal’s next biggest opening day for a traditional digital release (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”).

“Trolls World Tour” is the No. 1 title across all major on-demand platforms, “smashing expectations” on digital distributors including Amazon, Comcast, Apple, Vudu, Google/YouTube, DirecTV, and FandangoNOW.

“Trolls World Tour” also ranks as FandangoNOW’s most preordered title of all time, best-selling film on its opening day, and best-selling film during its first three days of a digital release.

The musical comedy-adventure marks the first major studio Premium VOD release, something that has irked exhibitors who demand an exclusivity window for theatrical releases and would’ve much preferred it had Universal simply delayed the film.

All eyes are on this experiment as one potential future avenue for more titles to make their debut.
