Sony’s TriStar Pictures has reportedly acquired feature film rights to creature designer Trevor Henderson’s “Cartoon Cat” creation.
Henderson is behind three popular online creature art creations which are all part of the same mythos – this, Siren Head and Long Horse. A five-way studio bidding war for Siren Head ultimately landed at Warner Bros. Pictures the other week with Zach Cregger co-writing.
TriStar is already said to be seeking a filmmaker to bring Cartoon Cat to life. In the online lore, Cartoon Cat is an ancient and malevolent entity wearing a cartoon mascot – a “cosmic parasite filtered through our old media”.
It is considered the most powerful creature in the whole mythos and arguably the most evil due to the character’s unchecked limitations, ability to inflict pain and being quite morally aware of their actions.
Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Scott Glassgold and J. Todd Harris, along with Thomas Pettinelli and Marc Marcum are producing.
Sony Pictures already has a working relationship with Henderson, as he did concept art on Screen Gems’ “Tarot” film.
