The keenly-awaited release of “Peninsula,” a sequel to 2016’s celebrated and global smash hit South Korean zombie action thriller “Train to Busan,” has made a big impact in the few places it has been able to be screened in Asian territories this past weekend.
Despite capacity limitations and other social distancing measures in these markets, the movie scored number one openings in four more Asian territories, finishing the weekend with a $20.8 million cumulative haul. Hitting its home market on Wednesday, the film completed its first five days in theaters with a cumulative haul of $13.2 million.
In Taiwan it earned $4.7 million over five days, in Malaysia it topped the box office for four days, in Singapore it became the top opening Korean film of all time besting its predecessor, and in Vietnam it played for three days from Friday and topped the chart each day.
