“Peninsula,” the follow-up to 2016 cult zombie action film “Train to Busan,” has locked down multiple international distribution deals with Well Go USA taking North America, Studio Canal nabbing the UK, and Purple Rain getting it in Australia and New Zealand.
Yeon Sang-ho, who helmed the 2016 film, returns for the new one which will be a “thought-provoking post-apocalyptic story about people fighting to escape land ruined by disaster”. The story unfolds four years after the ending of ‘Busan’ and is not a direct sequel – rather it’s another story set in the same ‘universe’.
The action follows a former soldier who has managed to escape the devastated Korean peninsula, but on a mission to go back into the territory he is surprised to find survivors. The film also has a $16 million budget, double that of the original which grossed $90 million worldwide and scored rave reviews.
“Peninsula” was also sold to France (ARP SAS), Latin America (BF Distribution), In-flight (Emphasis), Philippines (Pioneer Films), Taiwan (Movie Cloud), Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam (Clover Films), Hong Kong (EDKO), Japan (Gaga Corp), Spain (A Contracorriente Films), Germany, Benelux (Splendid Film), Thailand (Sahamongkol Film) and India (Kross Pictures).
The project began filming in June last year and is currently in postproduction. It will be released in Korean theaters in the summer and potentially overseas before year’s end.
