Trailer: “The Color Purple” Film Musical

Warner Bros. Pictures

Warner Bros. Pictures has officially released the first trailer for their new “The Color Purple” film adaptation.

The project is based on the Tony-winning stage musical based on Alice Walker’s 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The novel tells the story of the struggles of a Black southern woman over four decades during the early 1900s.

Nettie (Halle Bailey) and Celie (Phylicia Mpasi) are two young sisters who find themselves constantly dreaming about having a new life, one outside the daily discrimination and injustice they face, which allows them to go after what they want and feel like they belong.

The property was previously directly adapted as a straight dramatic film in 1985 by Steven Spielberg, who returns as producer here alongside Quincy Jones and Oprah Winfrey.

Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Ciara, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Louis Gossett Jr., and David Alan Grier star in the film that adapts the stage musical incarnation that first arrived on Broadway in 2005 and saw a revival in 2015.

Blitz Bazawule (“Beyonce: Black is King”) directs the project, which also has Danish cinematographer Dan Laustsen (“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”) serving as director of photography. Marcus Gardley penned the script for the film that aims to be an awards season contender.

“The Color Purple” opens on December 20th.
