The first trailer has been released for “Small Axe,” the upcoming five-film anthology series helmed entirely by “Widows,” “Shame” and “12 Years a Slave” director Steve McQueen.
Running from the late 1960s to the mid 1980s, each film in the series tells different stories involving London’s West Indian community, whose lives have been shaped by their own force of will despite rampant racism and discrimination.
The trailer below is for one of the films titled “Mangrove” which deals with the ‘Mangrove 9,’ a group of Black activists who clashed with London police during a protest march in 1970 and were pulled into a highly publicized trial that included the first judicial acknowledgment of behavior motivated by racial hatred within the Metropolitan Police.
Letitia Wright, Shaun Parkes, Malachi Kirby, Jack Lowden, Rochenda Sandall, Sam Spruell, Nathaniel Martello-White and Gary Beadle star in this episode.
BBC Studios and Amazon are backing the project with the title to arrive on Amazon Prime Video later this year.
