Netflix has released the official trailer for the film “Luther: The Fallen Sun” which serves as a sequel feature to the BBC’s hit British crime thriller, but is standalone enough that new audiences shouldn’t have an issue jumping in.
In this film incarnation of the series, a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars.
Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.
The police are hot on his tail, determined to bring Luther in or down if they have to. The killer meanwhile, armed with vast wealth and a high-level intellect, is more than ready for Luther’s challenge.
Cynthia Erivo plays the head of the squad hunting Luther, Andy Serkis is the killer, and Dermot Crowley reprises his role as DS Martin Schenk from the original series. The trailer indicates a considerable budget increase with some interesting looking action pieces on the streets of London and some icy landscapes.
The project is helmed by Emmy nominee Jamie Payne from a screenplay written by series creator Neil Cross. The film will arrive in select theaters on February 24th followed by its streaming debut on Netflix on March 10th.
Cross, Elba, Peter Chernin, David Ready, and Jenno Topping produce.
