HBO has premiered the first trailer for its space tourism comedy “Avenue 5” which hails from “Veep,” “The Thick of It” and “The Death of Stalin” creator Armando Iannucci.
“Red Dwarf” pioneered sci-fi comedy on TV while “Futurama” embraced the absurd and “Rick and Morty” the outright weird and dangerous. Here though, Iannucci has simply transplanted his signature acerbic satirical skewering of dysfunctional bureaucracies formula from DC & London political offices to the equivalent of a Queen Mary 2 in space.
Set forty years in the future when the solar system is everyone’s oyster, the series stars Hugh Laurie as the captain of a space cruise ship with Josh Gad as the rich owner of the line. Zach Woods, Nikki Amuka, Rebecca Front, Lenora Crichlow, Suzy Nakamura, and Ethan Phillips co-star.
Iannucci created the series, directed the show’s pilot episode, and will serve as executive producer. Kevin Loader, Simon Blackwell, Tony Roche, and Will Smith will also executive produce.
