Disney+ has released a minute-long trailer for “Hamilton,” a filmed version of the 2015 rap-inspired Pulitzer Prize-winning stage musical assembled from footage taken from some of the final performances pulled off by the original cast.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs, Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson, Anthony Ramos, Jonathon Groff, Okieriete Onaodowan and Jasmine Cephas Jones star in the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton’s life.
Originally slated for a theatrical run in October next year, Disney moved up the release to next Friday July 3rd – delivering the only major film release to hit for this year’s July 4th weekend.
The studio paid a reported $75 million for the rights to the filmed production, and so this is a major event for the streaming service which has over 54 million subscribers as of the beginning of May. Free trials have ended so those hoping to sign up, watch it for free, and cancel – you’re out of luck.
A film adaptation of the musical is in development but still likely many years off.
